KUCHING: Barisan Nasional (BN) supports the call by the Election Commission (EC) to ban any political parties contesting in the 13th parliamentary election to put up posters or buntings bearing caricatures of any individual or personality.

BN information bureau chief Datuk Ahmad Maslan said all BN component parties will comply with the rulings made by EC to avoid harping on any slanderous or malicious ideas.

He admitted that in previous elections, BN used facts and figures and depicted real pictures of individuals instead of caricatures on their campaign materials.

“I admit, there are minute cases where caricatures are used in the campaign posters of BN candidates, but that was before this ruling,” said Ahmad yesterday during his walkabout in Kampung Boyan – Gersik

He stressed that BN will revise its campaign materials and make a fresh start after the ruling made by the EC and called upon the opposition to do the same.

“Let us campaign in an ethical manner, as this will reflect a clean democracy and be a role model for others,” said Ahmad.

Meanwhile, Ahmad said that talks would be held with all the BN information bureaus to have their campaign materials in multiple languages.

“The campaign materials will be translated according to the areas where it will be disbursed in Mandarin or the Iban language,” said Ahmad.
