Abdul Kadir launches new party Ikatan

KUALA LUMPUR: Former information minister Tan Sri Abdul Kadir Sheikh Fadzir yesterday launched Parti Ikatan Bangsa Malaysia (Ikatan) that makes the welfare of Malaysians its main vision.

Abdul Kadir, who is president, said the party’s establishment is to restore the spirit of Malaysia like during the time of first prime minister Tunku Abdul Rahman Putra.

“Ikatan will make Tunku’s struggle and message of independence as the axis in restoring the rights of Malaysians,” he told reporters after launching the party here yesterday.

Abdul Kadir said Ikatan may not be able to join the next general election as the party is not legally registered with the Registrar of Societies.

“This is because we only sent the application form to the Registrar of Societies two days ago.”

Ikatan targets membership of about 500,000 and one million within a year of its establishment, he said. — Bernama
