LET’S RACE: Taib (holding flag) prepares to launch the buffalo race.
LIMBANG: The Barisan Nasional (BN) will always fight to ensure that no individual or race is neglected as the country develops and progresses, said Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud yesterday.
He said it had always been the BN government’s objective to ensure that all people live in peace and harmony.
“The concept and struggle of the BN government are fair and just to all races and this has been our biggest struggle since independence,” he said when launching Pesta Babulang and the Bisaya Buffalo Race in Limbang.
Taib pointed out that some countries which gained independence earlier than Malaysia are still chaotic today and do not enjoy peace and harmony unlike Malaysia.
“Our aim and vision and mission is to unite the people and to make sure that no one will be left behind as the country develops and progresses.
“We don’t make empty promises and will not slander others. The government is sincere in its struggle to ensure that every corner of the country has a share of development and progress, especially in the rural and remote areas,” he added.
Taib said the progress of development is now being felt and enjoyed by minority communities such as the Bisaya, which has a population of around 10,000.
The fact that Bisaya hold important posts in the government, he said, is a testament to the community’s abilities and capabilities.
He stressed that the strength of Sarawak lies upon the unity of the people of various ethnic groups.
“Our politics of development not only focuses on economic strength but also on maintaining and strengthening unity and solidarity among the people.
“It is important for the minority to enforce this strength through strong unity and harmony among all races.”
He added that Pesta Babulang is a unique symbol of identity for the Bisaya community that should be preserved and maintained.
Among those present were Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang, Minister of Public Utilities Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan, Limbang member of parliament Hasbi Habibollah, Lawas member of parliament Datuk Henry Sum Agung, Bukit Kota assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Ismail and Batu Danau assemblyman Paulus Gumbang.
