PUTRAJAYA: The federal government has brought much development to Sarawak in the past three years, particularly to the rural and remote areas of the state, through an allocation of over RM5 billion in National Key Result Areas and other programmes.

Given another five years, the Barisan Nasional (BN) government would be able to do more, said Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

He said this yesterday in his welcoming speech at a luncheon he hosted at Seri Perdana for a group of 54 longhouse chiefs, community leaders and councillors from Telang Usan and Marudi constituencies.

“In the past three years, Sarawakians have benefitted from an additional RM2.3 billion apart NKRA projects, and imagine what it would be like if BN is given another five years in Putrajaya as this is only the beginning and we aspire to do much more,” he said.

He was referring to the various basic infrastructures projects and assistance programmes which included RM5.7 million worth of roofing materials, RM5.7 million worth of water tanks and a slew of other projects for Telang Usan alone.

The big group of grassroots leaders were in Putrajaya to thank the prime minister and federal government for the unprecedented flow of rural development projects like roads, rural water and electricity supply, water tanks, 1Malaysia People’s Aid (BR1M) and other programmes in Telang Usan and Marudi constituencies under the Baram parliamentary constituency.

Najib said the development projects which included several major road links, bridges and others were proof of the BN government’s commitment to meet the needs of the rural people of Sarawak.

He gave an example of the 73km road from Long Lopeng to Ba Kelalan, involving the construction of of nine bailey bridges, which only cost RM52 million as it was carried out through the ‘Jiwa Murni’ programme under the concept of blue ocean strategy.

Other ‘Jiwa Murni’ projects undertaken by the Armed Forces through its Royal Engineering Corps, included Sungai Teniku-Marudi road (25 km), Belaga-Mejawa road (38 km), Medamit-Kuala Mendalam road (22 km) and Bario-Ba Kelalan road (43 km).

These projects have been completed except for Marudi-Teniku which is presently 57 percent completed and Bario-Ba Kelalan project which will start soon.

The prime minister told his visitors that BN needed their full support to ensure victory in the coming general election and to be able to continue implementing development projects in the state.

Earlier on, Temenggong Pahang Ding, representing Telang Usan, thanked the prime minister for being sensitive to the needs and aspiration of the Orang Ulu community, citing the appointment of Datuk Seri Idris Jala and Lihan Jok as minister and senator respectively.

Councillor Eda Igar, representing Marudi, said Najib had transformed the lives of the rural people in the constituency, particularly by building the Sungai Selepin and Sungai Liam roads and many other projects.

“Your announcement of the approval of the RM60 million Marudi-Miri road was received with loud cheers and shouts of joy on April 14, 2011,” she said.

All the visitors declared their full support for Najib to be returned with the mandate to lead the BN federal government after the coming 13th general election.

Also present at the function were Minister of Defence Datuk Seri Zahid Hamidi, Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry cum Baram MP Datuk Jacob Dungau Sagan, Assistant Minister of Agriculture (Farmers’ Organisation) and Marudi assemblyman Datuk Sylvester Entri, Senator Lihan Jok, Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau, director-general of Implementation and Co-ordination Unit Datuk Shukri Mohd Salleh and political secretary to the prime minister Datuk Shahlan Ismail.

The Marudi group presented a special ‘tongkat mengap’ (traditional Iban ritual pole) while Telang Usan presented the whole set of Orang Ulu warrior regalia as memento to the prime minister.
