KUCHING: Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) is confident that it would have the full support of the Barisan Nasional (BN) should the Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) stand against its candidates during the upcoming parliamentary election.
PRS secretary-general Datuk Wilfred Rata Nissom (pic) said he personally witnessed Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak and Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud give their assurances of support before thousands of longhouse folk in Julau recently.
“Both leaders assured that BN will support PRS should SWP put up candidates against PRS in any of our six parliamentary seats in the coming general election and we strongly believe they were very sincere in what they said.
“As a result of the assurances we are greatly relieved that we will not be alone if we have to square off with SWP. At least we now know that the whole BN force will also be with us,” he said yesterday.
Nissom said because of that the party was stunned that SWP president Larry Sng had concluded that the PM’s statement was merely for public consumption, implying that Najib was not being sincere.
Nissom stressed that the former Pelagus assemblyman should not judge Najib or Taib’s statements based on his (Sng’s) own ethical standards.
He added that Sng had shown total disrespect for the BN’s leadership at both federal and state levels with his statement.
“All this while SWP has been telling people that the party is BN-friendly but when it comes to actions, its leaders are showing otherwise,” said Nissom.
Despite calls from BN leaders for SWP not to contest against any BN coalition members based on its BN-friendly claims, Sng had maintained that the party would contest in all six PRS parliamentary seats.
The parliamentary seats currently held by PRS are Sri Aman, Lubok Antu, Julau, Selangau, Kanowit and Hulu Rajang.
