KUCHING: SUPP Youth section would not be surprised if party president Datuk Seri Peter Chin were to step down when his term ends in 2014.
The section’s chief Tan Kai said the party would lose a good leader if that happened but the party would respect his wishes.
“Certainly, we will regret it if he (Chin) retires, but, on the other hand, we have to respect his wishes. This is the stand of SUPP Youth,” Tan said yesterday when asked to comment on Chin’s disclosure that he would not defend his post as party president in 2014.
Chin was reported in a national tabloid yesterday as having told several people that he had no intention of seeking re-election in Miri in the coming general election or hold government posts.
“In fact, when he took over the party leadership, he told us that he will only serve for just one term. So, if he decides to step down upon the expiry of the current term in 2014, it is not really a surprise because he is a person who keeps his word,” said Tan.
Chin, who is also Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water, and Miri MP, succeeded Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Dr George Chan during the party’s triennial delegates’ conference (TDC) held here in December last year.
The TDC saw the party split into two camps due to allegations of irregularities in branch elections in the run-up to the TDC. One faction was helmed by Chin and the other by the party’s former deputy secretary-general Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh.
The matter was reported to the Registrar of Societies (ROS), but up till now the findings have yet to be made public.
