KUCHING: Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) president Larry Sng has resigned as special youth advisor in the Chief Minister’s Department to pursue his political career.
At the age of 33, Sng is possibly the youngest president of a Malaysian political party.
Sng said he tendered his resignation to the relevant heads yesterday and that his tenure of service was actually for another two years.
He added that politics is full of possibilities.
This could include contesting during the next parliamentary election, which is expected to be called soon.
He apparently sees the Julau parliamentary seat as the safest for him compared to the other five seats allocated to Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS).
Sng played down the suggestion that he may not only have to face Julau incumbent Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum, who is PRS vice-president, but also Meluan assemblyman Wong Judat, should the latter decide to leave Barisan Nasional (BN) to stand as an independent.
“YB Wong is not a party (SWP) member so he cannot state that he will be standing on SWP’s ticket in Julau,” said Sng, adding that Wong is still vice-president of another BN component, the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP).
Sng declined to comment on whether he would contest in Selangau against PRS deputy president Datuk Joseph Entulu Belaun.
However, he added that he might wait for the next state election, which is due in 2016, before contesting.
The other parliamentary seats held by PRS are Hulu Rajang, — which SWP deputy president George Lagong is said to be eyeing, Sri Aman, Kanowit and Lubok Antu.
A former Pelagus assemblyman, Sng was not renominated by the BN to defend the seat in April 2011 because he was not a member of any state BN component after being sacked by PRS for gross insubordination.
His membership in PRS was not reinstated despite the fact he held three assistant minister portfolios prior to the election.
