KUCHING: Meluan assemblyman Wong Judat yesterday confirmed he will contest in Julau if the BN fields Julau MP Datuk Joseph Salang in the coming general election.

“While PRS president Tan Sri James Masing has insisted on fielding Salang, we in Meluan constituency hope our CM and PM would not ignore our request to replace him (Salang).

“If this failed, then I will contest against Salang,” he said during Gawai Open House at his longhouse Rumah Ukam Mambang in Nanga Engkamop, Julau.

Wong, who is also SPDP vice president, however, did not state on whose ticket he would contest under. However, since the formation of Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) couple of weeks ago he is often seen at their gatherings.

Julau is traditionally a PRS seat. Both PRS and SPDP are BN component parties. Their other two state BN coalition partners are PBB and SUPP.

Wong claimed he had no personal quarrels with Salang but what he took exception to was his performance as MP of Julau – which houses the state constituencies of Meluan and Pakan.

“Salang has not been fair in the distribution of development projects. Moreover, he is an outsider and does not understand the needs and aspirations of the people here.

“We are not against BN but we do not want Salang to represent us in Parliament. He has been our MP for the past three terms and this is enough. So, if he is still being fielded to defend the seat, I will not support him even though he is from BN.”

Wong praised the politics of development propagated by Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and urged locals to pursue technical education in order to grab opportunities available at the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).

Meanwhile, SWP prime mover Datuk Sng Chee Hua, who was also at the Open House, reiterated that SWP was not against BN as a whole, but was against ‘bad politics’ practised by PRS elected representatives.

“SWP elected representatives will not be land-grabbing ministers, and neither will we give empty promises to the constituents.

“Those in PRS-held seats have had enough of the lies. I am confident we can win all the six PRS-held seats. Once we achieved that, we will be truly committed to the people.”
