Chin: Voters will accept Tan Kai

June 3, 2012, Sunday

MAKING A POINT: Chin speaks to journalists at Riot’s Gawai open house.

KUCHING: Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) president Datuk Seri Peter Chin is confident that the party’s proposed candidate for Bandar Kuching, Tan Kai, will be well received by voters.

The Minister of Energy, Green Technology and Water told reporters during a Gawai open house in Serian that Tan Kai would be “more acceptable than the DAP’s (Democratic Action Party’s) candidate”.

On the probability of Barisan Nasional (BN) winning back Bandar Kuching from the DAP, he said: “Well, we hope we can change the minds of the voters.”

He said SUPP would win back voters “through explanation, through what we have done and through the leadership of the prime minister”.

BN lost Bandar Kuching to DAP in both the 2004 and 2008 parliamentary elections.

During SUPP’s central working committee (CWC) meeting last month, Chin announced three ‘identified’ candidates namely Tan, Serian incumbent Datuk Richard Riot and Sarikei incumbent Ding Kuong Hiing.

Chin declined to disclose the candidates for Stampin, Sibu, Lanang and Miri although SUPP has submitted its list to BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

“Cannot. Once I tell you, you will tell everybody,” he said in jest when asked to reveal the four names.

However, Chin stressed that Najib had the absolute right to pick the right candidates.

“We are putting up the candidates and PM has the right to choose, not everybody,” he said, admitting that Najib could turn down a candidate or two proposed by the party.

“We have to accept that candidates proposed by us may not be acceptable. If so, we will then want to know why.

“If we are given a good explanation and if someone else is better than the proposed candidate, we have to accept. This is what we call the spirit of Barisan Nasional.”

On election preparations, Chin, who is also Miri member of parliament, said SUPP’s identified candidates have been on the ground and would be ready for battle as soon as parliament is dissolved.

Citing Riot as an example, he said: “If the election is to be called tomorrow, Richard is ready. Each of our identified candidates must do all they can to prepare for any eventuality.”

He added that all SUPP’s identified candidates have been notified to do their respective preparation work.

“So when PM announces that parliament is dissolved, then all we have to do is to put up the finishing touches.

“What the central will do is to coordinate the seven seats that we have, and ensure that their preparation is smooth. And in terms of visits and so on by VVIPs and leaders, we will arrange later on.”
