KUCHING: Assistant Minister of Public Health, Dr Jerip Susil said he had not been assigned to mediate between the rival factions in Sarawak United People’s Party as reported in a Chinese daily.
“I would like to clarify here that no instruction was given to me to mediate in any kind of negotiation,” he said yesterday.
It was reported that Dr Jerip had been instructed by the party’s former secretary-general Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh to play a mediator role for SUPP president Datuk Seri Peter Chin and Wong.
Dr Jerip, who is SUPP Bengoh branch chairman, said what was important now was to concentrate on the coming parliamentary election.
“It is also equally important to wait for the Registrar of Societies to deal with the irregularities in the last triennial general meeting,” he said.
Despite their differences, Chin led several party leaders, including secretary-general Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian, deputy secretary-general Matthew Chen, assistant information and publicity secretary Sih Hua Tong, Youth chief Tan Kai and Wanita chief Tnay Li Ping, to pay Dr Jerip a Gawai visit on Friday.
Before leaving, Chin told reporters that they did not touch on party and political issues as “it was a social visit”.
“Just some casual chats …nothing about politics. Try not to be overly concerned.”
Meanwhile, the Head of State Tun Datuk Patinggi Abang Muhamad Salahuddin and wife Toh Puan Norkiah as well as Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud and wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib also called on Dr Jerip on Friday.
Those who came along to extend their Gawai greetings were State Legislative Assembly Speaker Datuk Amar Mohamad Asfia Awang Nassar, Batu Lintang assemblyman See Chee How and Kuching City South Mayor James Chan.
