SPDP wings support call for reconciliation

KUCHING: The four wings of SPDP, namely Wanita, Youth, Putera and Puteri, fully support their president’s stand that the party and PRS should smoke the peace pipe to resolve a tiff which arose due to a personal vendetta.

The problem between both BN component parties came to a head recently when Meluan assemblyman and SPDP vice president Wong Judat attended a function organised by recently-approved Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) to blast Julau MP Datuk Joseph Salang Gandum, a PRS vice-president, over the yet-to-be constructed Nanga Entabai road project.

In a joint statement issued here on Sunday, the four SPDP wings invited all BN component parties to consolidate their efforts to ensure a big win for the BN in the coming 13th general election.

They stated that the BN’s real opponents are the opposition parties, and not each other.

“On our part, we have been aggressively and consistently organising activities in all our (SPDP) BN-allocated parliamentary seats. To make the presence of BN truly felt in view of the current political situation, the four wings are seriously inviting all BN component parties to work together as a team and in a more united spirit to secure all BN seats (in the coming polls).”

The statement was jointly signed by Wanita SPDP deputy chief Theresa Udam, Youth chief Robert Ayu, Puteri chief Barbara Mawan and Putera chief Tony Chen.

The spat between Wong and Salang has actually simmered for sometime already. It was most glaring during a particular function last year when both men jostled for the microphone in public in their attempt to explain what had happened to the Nanga Entabai project.

The problem worsened when Wong called for Salang to be dropped in the coming general election. In making that call, Wong was in the company of SWP prime mover Datuk Sng Chee Hua, who is said to have a score to settle with PRS in the coming polls.

Wong’s call for Salang to be dropped angered PRS leaders, and they are pounding on SPDP’s doors to have Wong disciplined.

In recent times, SPDP president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom had attempted to mediate between Salang and Wong, but public ridicule of Mawan by some PRS leaders, including Supreme Council member Richard Wil Uban, seemed to have muddied the water.

The second attempt by Mawan to kiss-and-make-up in Julau last Saturday too failed when only Wong and his supporters turned up to meet him.

Salang had claimed he would be somewhere else, and nobody from PRS showed up.

However, a disappointed Mawan told reporters covering the SDNU Pakan dinner in Sarikei on Saturday that he would not give up hope, and believed that there would be another opportune time to meet Salang and Wong.
