KUCHING: A landslip caused one lane of a road near Kampung Merdang Lumut here to collapse, causing traffic congestion along Muara Tuang Road yesterday. This happened barely two weeks after a similar incident caused a 100-metre stretch of road to sink near Semukoi in Serian.
Like the previous case, the one yesterday was probably caused by heavy rain. Yesterday, a survey at the landslip found that the remaining lane was passable by vehicles even though the other lane had sunk by three feet. It was said the road collapsed at about 8am yesterday.
Until yesterday evening, no repair work was done though the collapsed road was closed by the authorities concerned. There is a drain by the roadside, and it was believed the rainwater had washed away the soil underneath the road following heavy downpour since Sunday night. There was a traffic jam in the afternoon yesterday as many parents use this road to pick up their children from school. Police personnel were at the site to ensure smooth traffic flow.
