SHAH ALAM: Selangor Menteri Besar Tan Sri Abdul Khalid Ibrahim yesterday requested Datuk Dr Hasan Mohamed Ali to step down voluntarily as a state executive councillor because he no longer represented PAS.
Dr Hasan, who is chairman of the Islamic Affairs, Malay Customs, Infrastructure and Public Amenities Committee and state assemblyman for Gombak Setia, was sacked from PAS on Sunday for actions detrimental to the party. “I believe he is a gentleman. He should resign as a state executive councillor voluntarily for his own good and for the sake of others,” Abdul Khalid said in a statement. He said the state government respected the decision of PAS in sacking Dr Hasan and that he (Abdul Khalid) has been advised accordingly by the Office of the State Legal Advisor on Dr Hasan’s status as a state executive councillor. “The Office of the State Legal Advisor has advised that the menteri besar is empowered to drop Dr Hasan as a state executive councillor because he no longer represents PAS in the Pakatan Rakyat state government,” he said.
Abdul Khalid said the Office of the State Legal Advisor was of the view that while the consent of the Sultan of Selangor was required to appoint a state executive councillor, the ruler’s consent was not necessary when dismissing or dropping one.
The menteri besar said he would have an audience with the sultan on Friday to brief the ruler on the latest development and discuss a suitable candidate for the post. — Bernama
