LUNDU: The recent announcement by four SPDP elected representatives that they had quit the party rather than resigning from it will only serve to destabilise the party and Barisan Nasional (BN) as a whole. When making this remark, Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) president Tan Sri William Mawan also said the party being open, democratic and progressive has the mechanism and venue in place for dissatisfied members.
The Social Development Minister also said the members could hold forums to discuss their problems.
He explained that if the so-called SPDP 5 were really determined to play their role as responsible senior members of BN, they should not have highlighted their problems and grouses in the public and through the media because the party had proper channels to solve their dissatisfaction. “I do not know what they meant by ‘quitting’. The subject is standing on a very thin line here because they said they are not resigning. Their intention also indicated that their actions have nothing to do with SPDP anymore,” he said. “If they feel that the running of the party is neither progressive nor democratic enough, then we have the supreme council that would listen to the problem. We have a triennial general assembly (TGA) where we can change the committee members and bring in new ideas and suggestion. “No need to pose trouble. No point to hide in one corner and try to disrupt the solidarity of the party,” the senior minister said when speaking at SPDP Mas Gading solidarity dinner here on Saturday.
Describing the recent development as truly unnecessary, Mawan said he was baffled by the situation as over the past two years, the group of five had been highlighted over and over as if they were above SPDP, lamenting that there was no reason for members to indulge or be involved in such negative activities. “What you (they) have been highlighting is not for the interest of the party or BN but only to glorify yourself. What you have been doing will only create a negative effect and perception on BN as a whole,” Mawan charged. “If these individuals had followed the right channel, the problems could have been solved in six months. It would not take two bloody years. “This is what I do not understand,” said an irate Mawan when explaining that the party had kept its doors open for reconciliation the past two years.
Describing SPDP as a multiracial party with a very high level of solidarity among its members from various backgrounds and ethnic groups, he assured that everyone had a place in the party and that every member was equal. “Nobody in SPDP is superior or inferior to the others. We all work together with the government as a component party of the BN. Nobody will be sidelined, neglected and left behind. That will always be the way of SPDP,” continued Mawan.
Among the more than 700 diners at the function were Opar assemblyman Ranum Mina and Lundu District Officer Azmi Bujang as well as political secretary to the Chief Minister Peter Howell Jilan, SPDP Kuching Division liaison chief Capt Zainuddin Tan Sri Hamdan, event organising chairperson Lansia Tasing and local entrepreneur Henry Jinep and his brother William.
