Polls: SNAP to go at it alone again

KUCHING: Sarawak National Party (SNAP) has decided to go on its own to take on Barisan Nasional in the coming parliamentary election.

Its secretary general Frankie Nyombui said the decision was reaffirmed at the party’s central executive committee (CEC) meeting held last Sunday.

According to him, SNAP is now in top gear preparing for the election where it has planned to contest in at least
four parliamentary constituencies.

“SNAP is confirmed to contest in Mas Gading, Saratok, Lubok Antu and Baram. Although we have some common platform with STAR (State Reform Party), SNAP is requesting cooperation from STAR to support SNAP as fellow member of the United Borneo Front (UBF),” he said yesterday.

This will not be the first time SNAP went on its own as an opposition party. In last year’s state election, the party withdrew from Pakatan Rakyat a few days before nomination and fielded candidates in 27 seats.

SNAP and STAR are set to clash with each other in several seats, notably Mas Gading and Saratok in the coming election.

STAR, formed by former SNAP senior vice president Dr Patau Rubis, has seen a revival of late after UBF chairman Datuk Dr Jeffery Kitingan joined the party early this year.

STAR vice president Patrick Anek Uren, himself a former SNAP man, had recently hinted he wanted to contest in Mas Gading, and he even urged other opposition parties to stay out from contesting the Bidayuh-majority seat.

STAR last contested in the parliamentary election in 1999 although Dr Patau stood on SNAP ticket in 2008 when he stood in Mas Gading. STAR did not contest in last year’s state election.
