Opposition challenged to walk the talk

SIBU: BN leaders here yesterday challenged Pakatan Rakyat to lower fuel prices in states controlled by them.

They said rather than making promises to reduce fuel prices nationwide if they won in the 13th general election, Pakatan should do so now in places such as Selangor and Penang.

Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee said the price of fuel depended on the world market price.

“It’s got nothing to do with winning the election whatsoever.”

He described Pakatan’s promise of lowering fuel price as a gimmick to hoodwink the people.

He was asked to respond to PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s promise made in Kuching recently that Pakatan would lower fuel price if it managed to march into Putrajaya in the coming polls.

Jemoreng assemblyman Abu Seman Jahwie said many factors needed to be weighed before making such a decision.

“How can they reduce the price of fuel at their whims and fancies? The price is subject to supply and demand of the world market.

“This is economics. People can’t just raise and lower prices of fuel as and when they like. There are world market situations that need to be considered. This is nothing more than their empty promises to gain political mileage. But people are matured and know this. People are pleased with the government of the day,” he said yesterday.

Abu Seman, who is a political secretary to the Chief Minister, advised the people not to be hoodwinked by the sweet promises of the opposition.

PRS deputy president Datuk Joseph Entulu opined that the opposition was desperate for support.

“The way I see it, this is populist politicking,” said Entulu, who is Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development and Selangau MP.

SUPP Sibu branch vice-chairman Chieng Buong Toon too reckoned Pakatan was fishing for votes and feeling the pinch of the nearing polls.

“How can they claim they can reduce it without considering the market forces? But it would be a different story if they wished to subsidise more.”
