KUCHING: Malaysia cannot dance to the tune played by opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim as he is a political chameleon par excellence.
Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) president Tan Sri Dr James Masing said this yesterday when asked to comment on news that Anwar said he would retire if he fails to unseat Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak at the next election.
“We cannot believe what Anwar says because he always shifts the goal post,” Masing told The Borneo Post.
In an hour question-and-answer session streamed live on YouTube recently which
was picked up by international media, Anwar said he was confident that “we will win, but if not, I will step down.”
The former deputy prime minister also revealed that he would return to academic life if he lost.
Masing pointed out that Anwar has always been inconsistent in what he says and does from his time in the government and up until now as the opposition leader.
“He has his own agenda and Barisan Nasional has its own agenda,” he said, reminding the people that it was not wise to take his words.
However state PKR vice-chairman See Chee How believes that Anwar can unseat Najib and lead the country.
“It is now or never for Pakatan,” said See, who is also Batu Lintang assemblyman.
Asked about how PR would perform this election, See said: “It will be enough to win with a simple majority.”
Meanwhile, Masing hoped that PRS supporters, especially those in the rural areas, would not sell their ‘maruah’ (pride and dignity) to the opposition, particularly to Sarawak Workers Party (SWP).
“However, even as PRS president, I will not give them the directive not to
entertain SWP leaders when they visit the longhouses as I believe that they are matured enough to know who the leaders behind SWP are,” he said.
SWP is led by Larry Sng, who is former assistant minister in the Chief Minister’s Office as well as former Pelagus assemblyman.
