Not easy for SWP to join BN, asserts Dr Rundi

KUCHING: Joining state Barisan Nasional (BN) will not be a ‘walk in the park’ for Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) despite claiming to be BN-friendly.

This is because BN views discipline seriously when considering the application of any party to join the coalition even if it does well in the 13th general election, stressed state BN secretary-general Datuk Dr Stephen Rundi Utom yesterday.

“BN discipline should be adhered to at any cost all the time,” said the Assistant Minister for Public Utilities (Electricity and Communications) when contacted by The Borneo Post.

Adding that it was too early to look into the matter, Dr Rundi instead highlighted the need for BN to focus all efforts to consolidate its machinery to face the coming general election.

As reported in the media yesterday, PRS president Tan Sri Dr James Masing said his party would object if SWP ever applied to join BN to “put a stop to SWP’s wishful thinking”.

“Barisan constitution states that any admission to the BN coalition requires unanimous decision of all component parties,” he said.

On Friday, SWP president Larry Sng said the party would apply to be a BN component if it performs well in the coming general election.

He claimed the party had been supportive of BN since its establishment and had been BN-friendly despite the fact that it would be contesting in all PRS seats. The 33-year-old politician went as far as saying that he felt there was no contradiction for the party to be BN-friendly while being unfriendly to PRS.

“We don’t have quarrels with Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB), Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) and Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP). Our claims are only PRS seats. It is the ultimate aim of SWP to replace PRS,” Sng told The Borneo Post recently.
