Brighter days ahead for Ba Kelalan soon
LAWAS: Focus of the Rural Electrification Scheme (RES) for Lawas parliamentary constituency would now be switched to Ba Kelalan as almost the whole of Bukit Sari has been served by main lines.
Lawas parliamentary seat comprises Ba Kelalan and Bukit Sari.
Public Utilities Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan, who is also Bukit Sari assemblyman, said there were only a few areas in Bukit Sari which were not covered and it was due to late applications.
“RES funds are now ready for areas in Ba Kelalan,” he said at the breaking of fast and presentation of Raya goodies to special needs children, the elderly and orphans on behalf of Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) at Hotel Seri Malaysia Lawas on Sunday.
He added that the contractor had been instructed to give priority to those late comers who would be celebrating Hari Raya Aidilfitri.
On power interruptions in Limbang and Lawas of late, Awang Tengah said this was due to multiple factors, ranging from fallen trees on power lines to inclement weather, increase in area of coverage which strained the power generation capacity, and surge in demand during festive seasons.
He said power for both districts were from diesel-fuelled plants, with a small amount from Lawas mini-hydro dam.
“There is a need to increase the respective capacities through dam projects.
Feasibility studies are still being carried out,” he said, adding that this would form part of the northern Sarawak energy sector development programme.
On a related matter, Awang Tengah warned that the authorities would take stern action against power thieves.
“We have to take tough actions. Many countries are also doing likewise, and they take very tough actions on such illegal practices.”
Awang Tengah noted that said power thefts in the state involved industries, shop houses and homes.
Besides being illegal, it was also posed a hazard to lives and properties.
Also present at the function were his wife Datuk Dayang Morliah Awang Daud, Sesco board management director Paulus Palu Gumbang, Sesco CEO Zuraimin Kushaili, Limbang Resident Maria Hasman and Lawas District Officer Mohd Supaih Hamdan.
