Group to fly 125 Sarawakians home to vote

SIBU: Movement for Change, Sarawak (MoCS) has received more than 900 applications from Sarawakians residing in the peninsula for free air tickets to come back to vote for the general election.

Its leader Francis Paul Siah told a press conference that they could only approve 125 applications from students, pensioners and young adults due to limited funds.

“We have put up a notice on our Bring Voters Home' programme at the end of March to sponsor Sarawakians living in the peninsula with free air tickets so that they can return to vote.

“We received 670 applications on our closing date on April 11. After that we were still receiving requests until the number swelled to more than 900,” he added.

According to him, the majority of the successful applicants are students because the movement feels that they deserved the help more.

Siah said the air tickets were sponsored by individuals in the state and not from any fund raised from the public.

“We did not solicit any money from the public. Most of the donors are my friends,” he added.

Siah appealed to political parties from both sides to help Sarawakians in the peninsula to come back to vote by sponsoring their air tickets.

“Political parties spend huge sums of money putting up posters and billboards.

“I know of one politician who has spent up to RM600,000 just on election material.

“This is a waste of money as billboards and posters cannot give you votes,” he added.

He also appealed to the Election Commission to devise a mechanism to allow the thousands of voters from Sarawak living in the peninsula to vote.- The Star (FR)
