SIBU: Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Alfred Jabu has hit out at Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng for his criticism of the state’s policy on native customary rights (NCR) land.

Jabu said the national DAP secretary-general did not know the sentiments of landowners here “because unlike Sarawak, Penang has no NCR land”.

He added that the Dayaks should reject DAP because the peninsula-based party seemed to want to deny them the opportunity to be involved in land development programmes.

“We all should fully support Barisan Nasional, which is now implementing various transformation programmes that will improve the quality of life of the rural population,” Jabu stressed at a ceremony yesterday when he presented Amanah Saham Bumiputra (ASB) Sejahtera certificates to 87 persons from here, Sarikei, Mukah and Kapit.

Jabu, who is also Modernisation of Agriculture and Rural Development Minister, said the Barisan-led government always had the people’s welfare at heart and would continue to assist the urban or rural poor.

He pointed out that ASB Sejahtera was one of the many government programmes that helped raise awareness about creating a culture of investment and savings among the people.

Jabu also revealed that between 2010 and last year, under the National Key Results Area programmes, it had successfully implemented 277 rural road projects costing RM2.54bil, 357 rural water supply projects costing RM1.1bil, 1,037 rural electrification projects costing RM1.7bil and completed 22,224 houses costing RM553mil under the Housing Aid Programme.

He then pointed out that the government had placed a lot of emphasis on education.

“There are six universities, 167 secondary schools and 2,000 primary schools in the state, with many of them in the rural areas,” Jabu said, adding that “the quality of rural brain was as good as the quality of urban brain” as many rural students had achieved excellent academic results as well as in extra-curricular activities.-thestar online
