KUCHING: The campaigning agenda by Santubong independent candidate Affendi Jeman to bring Umno into Sarawak is a futile effort, said its incumbent Datuk Wan Junaidi Tuanku Jaafar recently.
For any party to enter the State BN coalition, according to Wan Junaidi, it would need the consent and approval of all component parties in BN.
“Anyone who claims and promotes Umno in Sarawak is in fact wasting his time as it will bring no benefit,” said Wan Junaidi, who will be facing Affendi the state chairman of the Umno Sponsors in Sarawak Movement (JPUNS) in a four-cornered fight on May 5.
The other two candidates are Mura Kadir from Star and Zulhusdi Hol from PKR.
Speaking at the sidelines of a Meet-The-Leaders session at Bandar Baru Semariang on Sunday night, Wan Junaidi also reiterated that since the era of Tun Mahathir Mohammad, no prime ministers have expressed their desire to bring Umno into Sarawak.
“PBB has also shown favourable results in every election, making it the backbone of the state BN,” said Wan Junaidi, also a PBB supreme council member, adding that this gives Umno all the more reason not to have a footing in Sarawak.
Meanwhile, Wan Junaidi is also confident that the Santubong constituency is a BN stronghold.
“The voters here are smart. They also realised that the strive of PKR is only for their de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to become the prime minister,” said Wan Junaidi.-theborneopost
