Mawan: Don’t focus on origin of candidate

SARATOK: Focus should be given to bigger issues rather than on trivial matters such as whether a candidate is local or not, said BN-SPDP candidate for Saratok Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom.

He said constituents should be more concerned about the need for more development under BN’s government transformation programme (GTP) and economic transformation programme (ETP).

Although 64-year-old Mawan hails from Ulu Budu Krian Saratok, his detractors and rivals, in their bid to frustrate his nomination as Saratok BN candidate before Saturday, claimed that he was not a local.

Being a state senior minister and social development minister, Mawan spent most of his time almost everywhere in Sarawak, and in his capacity as Pakan assemblyman he spent most of his time in Julau.

“There is no need to amplify the ‘local’ issue. The most important thing to bear in mind is that Saratok still needs further development and only the BN can bring forth development,” he said.

“I knew what is it to know about Abang Ali school, Abdul Rahman school, Ah Ming noodle shop, Tanjung Pok, Nanga Awik sawmill. There is no need to argue about the origin issue. We should be more concerned about the progress and pace of development in Saratok,” the SPDP president added when met here after nomination on Saturday.

The BN, he said, is committed in ensuring that parliamentary constituencies in Sarawak gain from GTP and ETP, and each constituency in the state would need able and capable elected representatives to connect the people with the objectives of these programmes.- theborneopost
