Ali banks on political tsunami in Saratok

KUCHING: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) Saratok candidate Ali Biju hopes that the political tsunami that happened in Krian during the last state election will happen again in Saratok during the upcoming general election.

Ali, who is state PKR vice chairman, said he had been working hard on the ground for the past two years and hoped that the constituents would give their support to him in the parliamentary polls.

He advised the people not to count on Barisan Nasional (BN) as it still did not have a confirmed candidate yet even though Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) president Tan Sri William Mawan Ikom had been rumoured to be BN’s candidate for the parliamentary constituency.

“It is still a rumour because if you read in the newspaper today (yesterday), Mawan said that Jelaing Mersat is still the candidate. This shows that they don’t have a confirmed candidate yet.

“Whatever it is, we got to be ready and face whoever SPDP puts in Saratok for the upcoming general election,” Ali told a press conference here yesterday.

The Krian state assemblyman was asked about his chance of winning Saratok should Mawan contest in the constituency.

PKR Julau potential candidate Andy Wong claimed that SPDP’s chance of retaining Saratok would be very slim due to the disappointing performance of the party during the last four years.

“In fact, when Mawan announced his interest to contest in Saratok, some PKR supporters in Pakan said they will volunteer to campaign for YB Ali Biju in Saratok in the upcoming general election because they are very angry to learn that Mawan will most probably be contesting in Saratok,” he said.

In Pakan, Wong related, PKR supporters there said Mawan was not qualified to contest in Saratok because they alleged that he could not even take care of his state constituency.

Meanwhile, state PKR chairman Baru Bian is confident that Ali will bring victory to PKR in Saratok, considering that he has the experience of the previous state election and good preparation.

“If I were Ali, I will feel honoured that the president of SPDP is coming to Saratok. It means that the incumbent is not doing enough and therefore should be replaced. Probably, that is the reason why the party president himself is coming down to Saratok,” he said.

On another matter, state PKR will be holding a talk this Saturday at Siniawan Bazaar, starting at 7pm.

The speakers for the talk will be PKR vice president See Chee How, PKR women national vice president Voon Shiak Ni and PKR Mambong potential candidate Willie Mongin, among others.
