Chong still mum on where he would contest

KUCHING: DAP state secretary Chong Chieng Jen is still keeping his lips sealed on which seat he would be contesting in the parliamentary election.

He said that whether he defend the Bandar Kuching seat or move to Stampin would depend on the strategic decision by the Pakatan Rakyat leadership.

“We wait for the finalisation of (Pakatan) seat negotiation. I don’t want to jump the gun, so as to respect the negotiations. This is also to avoid conflicts and confusion,” he told reporters at the DAP state headquarters yesterday.

Chong has been serving for two terms as Bandar Kuching MP since winning the seat in 2004. He is also the state assemblyman for Kota Sentosa, which is under Stampin.

Speculations are rife that Chong will be moved to Stampin in order to boost Pakatan’s chances of winning the seat.

Meanwhile, the five-term Stampin MP Datuk Yong Khoon Seng has indicated he would consider defending the seat if asked by the BN top leadership despite his earlier stand that he would not seek re-election.

On a related matter, Chong refuted a speculation made by a Chinese daily that he would not want to move to Stampin because he is of the same clan as Yong.

He explained that if asked to contest in Stampin, he would do so out of his political belief and affiliation.

To a question, he said DAP is asking for 14 parliamentary seats to contest in the state.

“We have been clear about this all the while,” he added.

On another issue, he hoped the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) will proceed with its investigation especially on high profile politicians.

He said MACC must take the appropriate action to show they are serious in enforcing the law and to prove that no one is above the law.
