BN Club denies having any plot to finish off SPDP in upcoming election

KUCHING: The Barisan Nasional (BN) Club has categorically denied having any ploy to finish off the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP) in the 13th general election (GE13).

Rumours have it that the club will be fielding independent candidates in Mas Gading and Saratok in an attempt to sabotage the chances of SPDP in the two seats.

A spokesperson for the club who requested anonymity, however, said there was no such thing and that they would not resort to things like that.

“Personally I have not heard of such rumours but if there are, I believe they must have been created and spread by the SPDP people themselves to tarnish our image.

“They want to make us look bad so after they lost the seats later on they will put the blame on us and use us as their scapegoat,” he said.

The source told The Borneo Post this when asked to comment on the purported rumours that the club will be fielding Stephen Ruin who is the personal assistant to Assistant Community Development Minister Datuk Peter Nansian Ngusie in Mas Gading and Cooplay Ngipa in Saratok.

He said anyone with sound mind will also know that the rumours were unfounded and created by someone with the intention to discredit the BN Club.

“Accusing us of planting an independent candidate in Saratok in particular is something totally unrealistic and illogical.

“The BN Club does not exist in Saratok so how is it possible for us to plant someone to contest there. It does not make any sense at all,” he added.

He said if it was true that Cooplay will contest and be sponsored by someone then it could be the work of the SPDP people themselves with the aim of splitting the opposition votes, knowing very well that the BN chances to win Saratok is very slim.

The source added that as the nomination and polling are just around the corner it was obvious that SPDP was mainly worried about how many seats they can deliver to the BN this time.

“This general election is very crucial for SPDP where it has to retain all four seats allocated to the party but based on the present political development in the state it is something far beyond their reach.

“For Mas Gading, if the party is allowed to contest the seat, it is not going to be a sure win for them. There are so many factors to the disadvantages of the party. So if the party’s recommended candidate Anthony Nogeh is nominated and he wins then, that will be the biggest bonus for the party because based on our information on the ground, their chances are slim,” he said.

He said SPDP will also face uphill task in Saratok regardless of who will be the candidate to take on Ali Biju from Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR). He said apart from Mas Gading and Saratok, SPDP will also face problems in defending Bintulu and Baram.

“In short, it will not be smooth sailing for SPDP to win its seats this time. If the party can retain two of its four seats, that is really a bonus,” he stated.-
