SUPP referring Sarikei, Bintangor members to disciplinary committee

KUCHING: More trouble is brewing in Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) as the central working committee (CWC) referred two members, one from Sarikei and the other from Bintangor, to the party’s five-member disciplinary committee for further action yesterday.

The decision was announced by party president Datuk Seri Peter Chin at a press conference after chairing the CWC meeting at the SUPP headquarters here yesterday.

He said party leaders were not over-reacting or being drastic in taking action against the two members.

He stressed: “CWC is determined to make sure that our party leaders and members are supporting not only BN but also the party in terms of policies and decisions.”

However, he did not disclose the names of the two branch leaders but said the one from Sarikei defied a warning last month that no party leaders or members should lobby for candidacy for the next election.

“We decided in our last CWC meeting that party leaders or members should not engage in lobbying for candidates, yet this particular member, whose name I cannot mention, went ahead despite our warning.

“So we are following through what we said last month and refer the member to the disciplinary committee,” he said.

This disclosure gave a strong hint that the member was Stephen Wong Kie Yong who has been openly going to the ground in Sarikei to gain support for him to replace incumbent Ding Kuong Hiing in the next election.

When contacted by telephone last night, Wong said he had not heard anything from party headquarters and was not aware of the CWC meeting held here yesterday.

He declined comment on the announcement by Chin.

However, a source close to Wong confirmed he was the Sarikei member being referred to the disciplinary committee.

On the Bintangor member Chin explained that he had ignored a directive issued by party secretary-general Prof Dr Sim Kui Hian pertaining to the reactivation of the party’s Bintangor branch.

“Bintangor branch was suspended due to some party election issues last year. We want to reactive the branch in view of the coming general election, but a member acted against secretary-general’s course of action.”

It was likely that the president was referring to Paul Hii one of the branch’s leaders who had been at odds with the CWC over last year’ branch election.

The Borneo Post also contacted Hii by telephone last night but like Wong, he said had not heard anything from the CWC and was not aware of yesterday’s meeting.

He added that he would not make any comment until he received an official notification from the CWC if he was the Bintangor member Chin referred to in his press conference.

On another party matter, Chin announced that SUPP would call its first central committee (CC) meeting on Sept 23 since the triennial delegates’ conference (TDC) held Dec last year.

“We hope that delegates from all over the state will come to listen to what party leaders have to report.

“We also want CC members to tell us how they feel regarding the party and the direction which we are heading. They can also tell us what we have to do over the next two remaining years of the committee’s term.”
