‘Put to rest automony, independence issues’

SIBU: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said issues regarding the state’s autonomy and independence through Malaysia should not be questioned anymore because the federal and state governments had a very good understanding on these.

He said when Sarawak joined Sabah and Malaya to form Malaysia in 1963 a very good understanding was forged between all the parties involved.

“After Sarawak joined Malaysia, it had undergone a lot of changes. The federal government would continue to help Sarawak to grow bigger.

“We have a partnership that has proved we can bring more progress to the state,” he said at a Hari Raya gathering at An-Nur Mosque in Jalan Awang Ramli Amit here yesterday.

Present were his wife Datin Seri Rosmah Mansor, Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud, his wife Puan Sri Ragad Kurdi Taib, Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu Numpang, his wife Dato Sri Empiang Jabu, Second Finance Minister Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, his wife Datin Sri Pauline Leong and Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee.

Najib told the 10,000 people present that the federal government had been giving equal attention to Sabah and Sarawak because the wealth and prosperity of the country must be shared by all.

An example of this, he said, was the nod for priority implementation of the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE).

“Just look at SCORE. It has recently attracted over RM8 billion of new investments, and its overall investment is now worth over RM30 billion.

“When Chief Minister Pehin Sri Abdul Taib Mahmud asked for SCORE to be given priority, I said yes immediately although there was a plan to supply electricity from Bakun to Peninsula Malaysia.

“I said the priority of Bakun must be given to Sarawak for the development of SCORE.”

Najib advised the people to be careful with those who always make promises but never fulfil them.

“Taib and I and other Barisan Nasional leaders are worried when making promises for fear we will be punished if we failed to fulfil the promises.

“But we, in BN, when we make promises, we make it in responsible and realistic ways. The hallmark of the BN is we will deliver what we promised.”

Najib also reminded Muslims to stay united for the sake of the nation and country.

For instance, he said the happenings at Al Aqsa Mosque in Jerusalem which had caused disunity, vulnerability and split among Muslims there should be a lesson to them.

He said Malaysia was lucky it has been receiving blessings from God compared to other Muslim countries which were mired in economic crisis and internal conflicts.

“If we are divided or disunited, we will be weak and certain quarters may want to take advantage of the situation. But if we are strong, we should be fair to the others, especially those in the rural areas still needing our assistance and our non-Muslim brethren, as God had wanted us to always do so.”

At the function, Najib presented a mock cheque for RM1 million for the upgrading of An-Nur Mosque.
