KUCHING: Party Rakyat Sarawak (PRS) will now find it easier to handle Meluan assemblyman Wong Judat as he is no longer in the Barisan Nasional after he was appointed vice-president of Sarawak Workers Party (SWP) last Saturday.
“It will make it easier for us as now, the battle path is clear as what he is doing now has no implication on Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP),” said PRS president Tan Sri Dr James Jemut Masing.
Until he was formally accepted by SWP, Wong had been taking potshots at PRS from behind the walls of BN as vice-president of SPDP, a BN component party.
“Now, there is no more complication. As Wong is now facing BN as an opposition candidate, we will tackle him as an opposition,” said the Land Development Minister.
Masing told The Borneo Post that the change of position of Wong did not make much difference except that it was making things easier for PRS as the latter had always been hostile to his party.
Wong resigned from SPDP to fulfil his vow to fight Julau MP Datuk Joseph Salang if the latter was re-nominated to defend the Julau seat.
With Wong joining SWP, a face-off with Salang looks inevitable in the coming general elections.
Salang when contacted said what Wong had been doing was exercising his democratic rights and he had not much to comment on his decision to join SWP.
“He must have done what he thinks is best and it is entirely up to him what he wants to do,” said Salang.
On meeting Wong head-on in the coming polls, Salang said it did not matter who stood against him or under which party.
“What matters most are the constituents. To me, the constituents are much more important than the candidate I am facing when it comes to elections.
“The outcome of the election will show whether the people support what he has done or if they liked the kind of personality he has displayed,” added the Deputy Minister of Information, Communication and Culture.
