DAP-PKR seat negotiation progressing well – Ho Leng

SIBU: Negotiation for seats between DAP and PKR for the coming general election in the state is progressing smoothly.State DAP chairman Richard Wong Ho Leng however said the final decision on the candidates would only be known a few days before the election.

“We believe the general election will be held sometime in May, and this will provide us with ample time to meet with PKR de facto leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to discuss the matter further.

“We’ll meet in Kuala Lumpur on March 13,” he told a press conference here yesterday morning after being asked to respond to an allegation that the negotiation between DAP and PKR was heading for a split. He said the allegation was meant to destroy the unity within Pakatan Rakyat (PR).Wong went on to say that he met Anwar when the latter came here during the Chinese New Year, but he did not say much on what transpired during their meeting.

“Anwar invited me to go over to the peninsula and be a speaker at a gathering.“He wanted me to bring the message of the April 16 Sibu by-election to the peninsula and share with the voters there the desire of the people here for change.”On the DAP’s campaign to go rural, Wong said they were hitting the right direction. He said they had already set up the Dayak Consultative Committee (DCC) to facilitate the (go-rural) campaign.

“We now have branches in Dudong, Mambong, Kapit and several other rural places.”According to him, at least 50 per cent of DAP’s candidates for the coming election would be Bumiputeras. He admitted it was not easy to secure votes in the rural areas, but given time, his party would have much to achieve. On SPDP president Tan Sri William Mawan’s claim that DAP would not be able to make any inroad into the rural areas, Wong said: “That is Mawan’s own assessment”.

“For us, we believe in hard work. Politics is about serving the people and as long as we are committed to serving the people, they (rural people) will appreciate our efforts in time to come.”
