Police chief fears Penans influenced by outsiders

FINDING OUT: Bakar (right) talks to an NGO member in Murum.

SIBU: Belaga police chief DSP Bakar Sebau has called on the Penan community in Murum not to be made use of by outsiders in continuing to stage the blockade.

Speaking to reporters here yesterday, he talked about the danger of them being put into trouble with the law if the current event turned ugly although the situation had been well controlled so far.

He feared that if violence erupted, the outsiders would flee, leaving the locals to face the law alone.

“As far as I understand, there is still room for negotiation between the community and the government. They should use peaceful means in the spirit of goodwill. Do not turn violent,” he said.

On those caught participating in illegal assemblies and riots, he said they would be investigated under sections 341, 143 and 147 of the Penal Code.

Bakar said this yesterday because he feared that certain NGO members from outside might have led the local community to mount the blockade.

The Belaga police chief said he was at the scene yesterday and found a man from Bakun going upstream to lead about 10 persons guarding the blockade.

“The police identified him as a member of an NGO. We believe NGO members have been supplying ration to the Penan community so that they can stay on at the blockade.”

Bakar confirmed the Penan community set up the blockade in Murum on Sept 26.

He said at the height of the blockade, more than 200 people took part in it.

When he was there yesterday, he said 10 persons were there with NGO members from Bakun.

“I saw him and his assistant distributing ration to the protesters. I told him if he wanted to help the people, send ration to the community in their kampung or longhouses.”

He said he also asked the NGO leader for his identity card.

“Initially, he refused. Later, he complied.”

Bakar said resisting the police when carrying out their duty would tantamount to committing an offence.

He said since the blockade was set up, the police had been there to maintain peace and order.
