KAPIT: PKR Hulu Rajang has endorsed lawyer Abun Sui as its candidate for this predominantly Iban constituency in the impending 13th general election.

Its chairman Frankie Bedindang Manjah told reporters after the branch’s annual general meeting (AGM) at Rumah Tuan in Lepong Baleh on Sunday that Abun was the right man as he had earned his reputation as a staunch defender of native customary rights (NCR) land.

He added that the AGM also adopted several resolutions, especially on the lack of infrastructure development in the constituency.

Frankie said the electorate were unhappy over many issues, such as severe water shortage in places such as along Jalan Selirik, Bukit Goram and Jalan Selirik Bypass, and dearth of proper roads in the rural areas linking longhouses.

The people also wanted to be updated on the construction progress of the Kapit-Sibu Road.

Meanwhile, Abun, who is also PKR Hulu Rajang secretary, said feedback garnered thus far suggested that Baleh folk did not want the proposed Baleh Dam as they felt that it would not benefit them.

“They (locals) feel that its construction will massively destroy the environment, vast tracts of land would be submerged in water, and the project would only benefit cronies,” he charged.

Abun also wanted the government to review timber concessions.

He argued that the people should be the main beneficiary of logging activities, and that logging firms should reserve up to 30 per cent of profit earned for the people.

Tuai Rumah Maarup Jalai of Baleh also supported PKR’s stand on the Baleh Dam because his people had ancestorial land, called ‘Tambawaai Atan’, dating back to 1932.
