Ali plays down PKR defection to SPDP

KUCHING: Krian assemblyman Ali Biju plays down a supposedly defection of PKR supporters in Saratok to SPDP, saying that the leader of the group, Gani Eli, is just PKR Roban Melayu sub-branch chief instead of its divisional chief.

He further said that the defectors’ status was suspect as they could also just be grassroots supporters as opposed to party members.

The state PKR vice-chairman insisted that the alleged defectors are just supporters of the independent candidate Datuk Abang Rosli Abang Paleng who lost together with him (Ali) in the May 5 parliamentary polls in Saratok against the BN-SPDP candidate Tan Sri William Mawan.

“I was made to understand that they were supporters of the independent candidate who contested in the last parliamentary election,” said Ali yesterday.

“This is natural in politics. Some will go, some will come, as we practise democracy. However, this move will not affect the strength of PKR in Krian,” he insisted.

On Wednesday, Gani with his 108 loyalists said they have quit PKR and joined SPDP and surrendered their membership applications to Mawan at the SPDP headquarters here.

To this, Mawan said SPDP is still appealing even though it has gone through a series of upheavals.

Like Gani, his former secretary in the PKR Roban fold, Abang Mokhtar Abang Zulkifli, said opposition parties like PKR do not have the means to change the welfare of the people as well as to improve development in Saratok.

Meanwhile, state PKR chief Baru Bian, who is also Ba Kelalan assemblyman, said he is also suspicious of the status of these defectors because they did not carry PKR membership cards.

However, even if they are PKR members, their defection would not dampen the PKR spirit of unity, Baru maintained. - theborneopost
