‘SUPP, MCA and Gerakan merger unfeasible’

KUCHING: It is impossible for SUPP, MCA and Gerakan to merge.

Minister of Welfare, Women and Family Development Datuk Fatimah Abdullah, in expressing the opinion yesterday, explained this was because SUPP is a multi-racial party whereas MCA and Gerakan represent the Chinese community.

“It (merger) is not an easy thing to implement and the suggestion is irrelevant in the context of Sarawak,” she said when met by reporters.

She had earlier officiated at an event ‘Sejambak Kasih’ to present donations to 200 recipients, comprising the elderly, the disabled and the poor around Pantai Damai constituency at Surau Hidayatul Rahman, Kampung Gersik, yesterday.

According to her, the basis of the merger was to champion the cause of the Chinese and she doubted whether the merger could garner support of the community.

She pointed out that MCA, Gerakan and SUPP needed to do some soul searching due to the dwindling support.

Earlier in her speech, Fatimah said the government was committed to uplift the socio-economic standing of the people.

For this reason, she pointed out that welfare assistance would continue to be rendered to the poor and the less fortunate.

The 14,774 monthly welfare recipients across the state will soon receive their aid, she stated.

Among those present at the event were Pantai Damai assemblyman Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi, state Welfare director Noriah Ahmad and community leaders from Pantai Damai.- theborneopost
