MIRI: Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) chief Baru Bian admits that it is not easy for Pakatan Rakyat (PR) to take over Sarawak from Barisan Nasional (BN) but deemed it is not an impossible task.
In fact, he said, PR needed to work extra hard to take Sarawak from BN, especially on changing the mind-set of the people in rural areas who are staunch supporters of BN.
“This is because they have been ‘instilled’ with BN’s slogan that ‘only BN can bring in development and without BN, there will be no development’. This is the mind-set that we should change and this is our aim at the moment.
“Whether we take over the government or not is not the main issue, but we will work hard to change the mind-set of the people to accept the struggles of PR, and if we succeed one day, PR will take over and govern Sarawak,” he said.
Speaking to reporters here, Baru said compared to an urban electorate, it is harder to convince rural folk and if PR were to take over Sarawak, their focus will not be on urban areas alone but to change the rural voter’s mind-set.
“In the urban areas, the mind-set of has changed and people are already accepting the struggle of opposition political parties such as PR.
“But in rural areas, only the educated can accept the concept and mission of the opposition, so PR has to wait for more people to understand our objective.
“This means that we may still not able to take over Sarawak in the next state election, but one day we will succeed in the quest,” he said confidently.
In line with that, Baru said PKR would recruit more members as young voters are the group identified that can bring change for a new mind-set in the state’s political world.
Touching on the preparation of PKR Sarawak for the 11th state election expected in two more years, Baru said PR would be holding a meeting this month to discuss possible candidates and seats they will contest in.
When asked if PKR would retain all the seats it contested in during the last state election, he said there is a big possibility that all the seats will be retained, especially those with the potential to win.
“However, we will tolerate any party in PR if there are certain seats where the party has high winning potential, as our main focus is to ensure that BN does not win easily.
“This means that we will ensure that PR puts candidates in all 71 seats in the next state election,” he pointed out.-theborneopost
