Mawan: No way Tiki

Tan Sri William Mawan

KUCHING: SPDP president vetoes Mas Gading MP’s plan to defend seat under BN banner.
Incumbent Mas Gading MP Datuk Dr Tiki Lafe has no chance to stand as a direct Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate to defend his seat in the next general election as Sarawak Development Progressive Party (SPDP) will not endorse his candidacy.
The party’s stand was announced by its president Tan Sri William Mawan at a press conference after presenting cheques to non-governmental organisations at his office here yesterday.
The BN has allocated Mas Gading parliamentary seat to SPDP and as such only the party’s endorsed candidate can stand in that constituency under the ruling coalition’s banner.
“We have an understanding on this matter with the other BN component parties – that only candidates endorsed by a BN component party will be nominated as BN candidates,” Mawan stressed.
Dr Tiki had told the Borneo Post on Wednesday that he would defend his seat with or without the endorsement of SPDP as he was still the chairman of the BN coordinating committee for Mas Gading.
He was also quoted to have said that his political fate was not entirely in the hands of SPDP as the chief minister, as the state BN chairman and the prime minister as the national BN chairman, had the final say in fielding or dropping him in the next election.
Announcement ends Tiki’s chances
However, Mawan’s announcement had all but ended Dr Tiki’s chances of defending his seat on the BN ticket unless the top BN leadership overruled his decision.
Touching on Dr Tiki himself, Mawan described him as a ‘messy’ and ‘indisciplined’ politician who had no regard for the party.
“He has created a mess and was indisciplined, he has been served with a show cause letter. So what do the people want us to do, sack him so that he can qualify to become an independent BN candidate?”
Dr Tiki, a three-term MP who is a former deputy minister and currently the chairman of the National Service Training Council, also warned other aspirants to stay out of his constituency as he was still the sitting elected representative of the area.
SPDP had issued Dr Tiki a show cause letter in November and he was given one month to reply.
